ACTION ALERT: Ask the Senate Education Committee to Support HB 159

Pivotal decisions are being made right now at the Roundhouse for the future of New Mexico’s children, including how their cultures, heritages, and languages are honored by our public education system.

Tomorrow, the Senate Education Committee will discuss HB 159 and we need you to show your support for a multicultural framework in our schools.

HB 159 aligns the New Mexico Indian Education Act, Hispanic Education Act, and Bilingual Multicultural Act to establish a foundation in the public education system for supporting the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students across New Mexico.

Please call our Senators on the Senate Education Committee and ask them to ensure our public education system will support the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students of New Mexico.

More on HB 159

HB 159 “Multicultural Education Framework” is sponsored by Representatives Tomás E. Salazar, Christine Trujillo, and Derrick J. Lente.

HB 159 acknowledges the previous foundational work of our legislature and public education system in the establishment of the New Mexico Indian Education Act, Hispanic Education Act, and Bilingual Multicultural Act, while calling for the alignment of these goals for a truly transformative education system.

The framework proposed in HB 159 will provide school districts with support to honor the unique cultures, heritages, and languages of our students.
