PART 1: JOB DESCRIPTION: PART-TIME COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR
MEDIA STRATEGY
- This position will work directly with the Executive Director and Steering Committee to develop and implement the organization’s communication strategies.
- Work as part of the internal communications team with other coalition members to align media strategies with overall organizational and communications goals.
OWNED MEDIA & CONTENT CREATION
- Ensure consistent and updated messaging across TENM’s platforms (website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook).
- Maintain an updated content calendar and create engaging social media content for existing platforms on a regular basis.
- Draft and distribute quarterly e-newsletters and monitor metrics to inform and grow the network.
- Support the coordination of video production opportunities including casting, asset collection, reviewing cuts, and collecting feedback from the coalition.
- *Videography experience is a valuable asset for this role but is not required.
EARNED MEDIA & CONTENT CREATION
- Develop and implement earned media strategies to increase visibility and support for the coalition’s goals.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local, state, and national media outlets to promote the coalition’s initiatives.
- Maintain an updated media contact list for targeted outreach and relationship building.
- Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and pitches to generate coverage of coalition events and issues.
- Create compelling content for earned and owned media like op-eds, articles, one-pagers, and blog posts to support media outreach efforts.
- Engage spokespeople and surrogates to offer reporters interviews with experts and/or those with lived experience.
PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
- Coordinate in-person and virtual convenings with partner organizations to advance coalition goals and activate audiences across the state.
- Identify cross-posting opportunities with partner organizations to expand the reach of the coalition and the partner organization.
MONITORING & REPORTING
- Monitor media coverage and report on trends and TENM placements.
- Establish a tracker with goals for annual earned and owned metrics to measure success and effectiveness of strategies.
- Prepare reports on owned and earned media activities, outreach activities, coverage, and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees in these or related fields are also welcomed.
- Experience: Experience in education or education advocacy preferred or a strong desire to learn and engage in these areas.
- Skills:
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that advance the organization’s mission and goals.
- Writing and Editing: Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to tailor messaging for diverse audiences.
- Digital Communications: Proficiency in digital communications tools, including social media platforms, email marketing, website management (e.g., CMS platforms like WordPress), and analytics tools.
- Brand Management: Experience in brand development and management, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
- Event Management: Experience in planning and executing communications for events, including press conferences and community outreach activities.
- Analytics and Reporting: Ability to analyze and report on the effectiveness of communications strategies using data and metrics to inform decision-making.
- Certifications: We encourage listing industry certifications or extra skills you bring to the table for us to consider in your application.
- Non-Profit Experience with a proven ability to develop and execute strategic communications aligned with the organization’s mission.
- Media Relations: Successful track record in managing media relations, including pitching stories, handling press inquiries, and building relationships with journalists.
- Content Creation: Experience in developing content across various channels (e.g., press releases, newsletters, social media, blogs, annual reports).
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Location: Hybrid – mostly remote with some in-state travel for in-person meetings.
COMPENSATION
- Compensation: Starting at $30 per hour
- This position is part-time, contractor, with the potential for full-time employment in the future.
